TRADITIONAL BHUJODI WEAVER FROM KUTCH (NATIONAL AWARD WINNER)

Profile of Artist:

Kankuben Hirji Vankar comes from the master Craftsman family from Bhujodi, Kutch.

Kutch weaving stands for its skill of creating fine, intricate motifs from coarse yarns like wool. The weaving style enables fabrics to stay cool in summer and give warmth in winter. Kutch weaving has been a unique confluence of the weaving styles of Sindh, Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Initially Kankuben Hirji use to work on traditional items like woolen shawls and cotton sarees but the fabric of Kutch art and craft is embedded in social need and is now expanding its spheres into the design sensibility of the contemporary world.

As they have entered into the international market, nowhere are many other products added to their list like mufflers, stoles, veils, cotton yardage, carpets, home furnishing items, in silk and cotton mix weaving.
